Magnolia pier, 12/31 Herring fishing Big Ed Macerlean (pictured frozen above) and I braved our way through the snow to Long Beach's Magnolia pier. This was quite a drive for two Suffolk boys who don't understand the Nassau culture. However we made it despite the bad driving by the Long Beach residents. When we got there we were met in the parking lot by an older Russian gentleman who told us to turn around and stay warm. From the look of him, it was my guess he had been standing on the dock without much success for at least a few hours.Regardless, Ed and I found ourselves on the pier within moments. After about ten minutes the Russian fellow came out to check our success and offer advice. That's understandible since he obviously was a hunter gatherer. He spoke very little English but managed to communicate his advice in generous proportions. From what I understand, it is best to use a 1 or 2 ounce weight on your herring rig and bounce it off the bottom. We were still not catching any herring but we were much wiser for the trip. The Russian fellow's last peice of advice was to go home , get drunk and enjoy the new year. By that time we could have used our frozen balls for ice cubes and so decided to take his advice. No herring but we'll be back. Did you know the IGFA world record atlantic herring was caught on Magnolia pier? Trip to Montauk Got this eel under the west end jetty of montauk pond. Holy cow!! He weighed in at over 15 pounds. We left the camera in the hotel room and had to wait to take the photo.Eel steaks for dinner. Yum!
Stony Brook 12/27/00 After wading through some mushy ice I finally got my dive underway. Boy that cold water is tough on the face but its well worth it. got to see all the usual sponges and green and rock crabs. There were also a few interesting visitors. First there was a tiny squid about 3" long. The little bugger was so cold I caught him with my fingers. I let him go but have no idea what kind he was. I saw plenty of sculpin from 3" to 1' in length. They were frozen as well, and easy to catch if you want some in the old aquarium. Also , I saw a turbot. They are a pretty flounder type fish with a mouth like a fluke. I caught him by hand in the cold water as well. I let them all go before I made my way back through the ice and to my car.
